1. I want learn the basics of all major communications and networking protocols used in industrial and building automation systems.

Typical Protcols, I'm interested in are: Modbus, Fieldbus, DeviceNet, ControlNet, Profibus etc.

2. I'm also interested in knowing, the performance capabilities of each of these protocols.

3. For example, which protocol is suitable in which conditions ?

Can you please, help me find online resources (weblinks, ebooks, notes etc.) to find answers to above queries ?

I put here the manual "Communication with Simatic" from Siemens.In this manual you have a description about Profinet,Profibus,MPI,PPI,a.o.
