When using on-chip memory, we can read/write it just as we can configure the FPGA. However, provided that I am going to use the off-chip memory perhaps an SDRAM to store the Nios II program, how would I go about doing that?

Reading the instructions from the SDRAM is quite simple, we just createa an SDRAM controller in the Qsys and connect the instruction master to it. Done. However, I am not sure how to store the program code into it in the first place.

I think it's done by coping the program memory from the non-volatile memory device to the of-chip SDRAM.
I.E: a bootloader...
