hi,
i want to test the max 232 using hyperterminal interface to know weather max 232 is working or not can any body know......

just reply..........

if you are using a controller then write a simple program to send data serially... connect the controller UART through the max232 to pc and see if the data comes on the hyperterminal window..

else power on the board and connect the cable to the PC. open hyperterminal. SHORT tx and rx pins of max232 by seeing the data sheet and type something on the keyboard.. see if you get those characters typed on the terminal window... dont short the pins for long time when powered on......

you need to make up a cable to connecct the Rx (receive data) and Tx (transmit data) pins of the MAX232 to the COM1: port of your PC, e.g.
The RS232 Standard

hi,
i am not using any controller...i doveloping a programmer ckt .before placing max232 i want to check it out with hyperterminal........ actually i am bit confused over which pin is tx and which is rx pin of max 232... i am doing it on breadboard.......

you can follow the second option i have told and you can see the data sheet of max 232 IC for tx and rx pin......

and the capacitors required for the max232... use 10uf/63v electrolytic capacitors for max 232... sample circuit is given in the datasheet itself....

in the figure in above link , it is given as 1uf.. you can use 1uf or 10uf.... but all capacitors should be of same value, either 1uf or 10uf.....

hi,
thank you........i got it...........

hi,
ckshivaram
i made same ckt which you said....but in hyperterminal i am not receiving the character which is transmitting...........
without shorting the tx and rx pins max232 ,receiving the charecters but not same as transmitting....
weather it conferms that max 232 is gone..........

you need to short the tx and rx pins of max232..

first connect the serial cable to the PC and short pin 2 and 3 on the cable which is other end of cable.... type something on the keyboard and see if you get it on hyperterminal... then remove the short and type you should not get anything....

it will tell if the serial port of oc and the cable you are using is corrector not...
please let me know once you are done with this....

dont use max232 board or ic you have made for testing the above....

try this circuit - short the PC-TXD and PC-RXD and it should echo the chanracters typed on hyperterm

hi,
i know serial cable test......i done it before......
i shorted 2,3 pin serial cable , it is displaying in hyperterminal as it is..................

then connect the same cable to the max 232 IC and now short the tx and rx pinson max232IC and connect the serial cable PC. power ON and short TX and RX of max232 and repeat the loopback test......

you should get the characters.. If you dont get then just swap the TX adn RX wires on one side and test it again......
