How does DCT transform energy only into a few coefficients?

Hi,

When we apply DCT to a pixel matrix of an image, energy tends to be concentrated into a few significant coefficients. Other coefficients are close to zero or significant. Can somebody explain little more, exactly how DCT transforms energy only into a few coefficients?
