how cellphone battery works

How does cellphone battery works?
Connecting the ac adaptor/charger without the battery will not power the handphone. Does it mean that the charge goes through the battery first then to the handphone's system? If so, this means that using the handphone while charging the battery will lessen the battery's life.

Please share your thoughts.

Thanks.

It is possible that some of the auxiliary systems of cellphones are driven via different power circuit and that is changed only when batteries are connected.

Simply assume, that the battery is needed to buffer the peak current demand of the GSM transmitter, the charger isn't designed to supply it. In so far, you can say, that part of the energy goes through the battery, but why should it involve higher battery wear?

I think the problems are due to some of the safety concerns regarding Li-Ion batteries. Overcharging a Li-ion battery can turn its lithium oxide into metallic lithium, increasing the danger of an explosion. For that reason, need to use Li-ion batteries with integrated sensors to monitor temperature, voltage and the current being charged or discharged. It’ s a must to prevent personal injury and to protect the equipment that the battery powers. Smart chargers may include several functions in which a short-circuit, open, under cutoff, temperature or the OK state is detected. Any timeouts for all states of the charger are transmitted to the main controller, and for no battery connected, phone blocked/not working.
