help needed in I2C project

hi friends!

i am doing RTL coding for I2C controller. i thought of doing it in ASIC rather than going for FPGA so that i could gain some experience. i am having tools like

MODELSIM and XILINX for synthesis and verification.
DC and PT .
do i need any other tools? can anyone gimme required tools at each stage of designing? pls gimme suggestions how to approach my target!

I WANT TO DO IT AS ASIC PROJECT. I DO HAVE THE SPECIATIONS DOWNLOADED FROM XILINX WEBSITE.

THAT PROJECT WAS IMPLEMENTED USING CPLD. NOW I WANT TO DO IT AS AN ASIC ..
