rs232 galvanic isolation

Hi!
I am building pcb with RS-232 (Maxim Max232) and USB 2.0 (FTDI FT232) implemented.
Is it needed to make galvanic isolation for both communications with PC?
How can I make it if answer is yes? Please suggest some techniques. If I use notebook
do I need galavanic isolation too?
Thank you.
Regards.

usb galvanic isolation

Hi epp,

You don't need galvanic isolation. This could be a useful feature, but nothing more than that.

Galvanic isolation is more of a luxury than a necessity. For galvanic isolation you can use two optocouplers b/n MAX232 and your target board. (Try and power the MAX232 from the serial port itself and use a separate power supply for target board.

For galvanic isolation, you should not have a common ground.
