There are a number of Digital Frequency Display (DFD) kits at; http://www.aade.com/

Phil Rice, VK3BHR, has one here **broken link removed** using a 16F84 and an LCD display...

receiver frequency counter

On the italian edition of " Nuova Elettronica", May 2004 pages 44 - 63 there is a kit for a frequency meter with offset, price 92 Euro, up to 2,2 GHz, crystal with oven.

digital reading 10 digits.
