You can learn HDL language and write your code and synthesize them into circuits. If you want to learn more detailed circuit structure, you can layout your combination and sequent circuits using tools like l-edit on pc, and simulate them, you can design your adder, multiplier, d-flip flop like.

is l-edit out of date, i am learn layout of ic form the book named "physical design ofCMOS intetgrated circuits using L-Edit " published in 1995 by PWS

an elementary project on sequential and combinatorial projects is any counter counting ina weird sequence ...a 4 bit that counts :
1,F,2,E,3,C,4B,5,A,6,9,7,8,0,1 .. can you design this ?

hi

if u know hardware description languages like verilog or vhdl, then no problem. just describe u'r desgign in it.

Arithmetic logic unit(ALU) with special features is also an elementary project.
multiplication of 8 by 8 bits is also good project.
