hi all,
Can anyone say, based on which criteria, EbN0 value have to be chosen to plot BER curve?
thks n advance.

Hi smanjume,

that depends esentially on the system and of the order of BER you are interested in.
For instance, it is usual to look for BER in the order of 1e-3 to 1e-7. For antipodal signalling (e.g. BPSK) without degradations, which is usually taken as a reference sustem, this is achieved with Eb/No in the range of about 7 to 11 dB.
Orthogonal binary system (e.g. orthogonal binary coherent FSK or unipolar baseband) needs 3 more dB for the same BER, and so on.
Coded systems above threshold (low BER) need less dB for the same BER.
Real systems need more dB od Eb/No because of implementation losses.
Say you need to look at:
- system
- range of BER of interest
- whether system is ideal (no implementation losses) and will be calculated or simulated, or real (worse than ideal, and more or less how much)
Regards
