Hello,

Is it possible to do a DRC whereby it only checks clearance and only for the top layer?

According to the manual, the DRC check is always performed for all layers. It might be possible to disable some checks by temporarily loading a different design rule set.

Try turn off the display on the layers you don't want. I never try it, but worth a try.

You don't actually need to try.
All signal layers are always examined by the Design Rule Check, no matter if visible or not (DISPLAY command).

With some DRC errors it will report 'xxx errors with yyy errors in hidden layers' or something similar, which may achieve what you need.
