Power Factor correction can be done by using Inductive or capacitive addistional loads, this depends if what load you have.

Before you can correct power factor, of course you must get its value first, mostly, loads is inductive, therefore what you need to add is a capacitive load.

Hi,
Are u improving pf of a powersupply?

Re: PF correction by PIC ?

There is an App Note from Microchip's web site that talks about using a PIC for PFC

Re: PF correction by PIC ?

thx Johnnyquest :) i had the notes , i dont kno wy i over looked it, well i kno abt inductive and capacitive pfc but i dont want to use any sort of inductive or capacitive bank, only using logic , is it possible , any other suggestions ?

I think you can find ST L6561 6562 power factor IC datasheet
and application note ,

1. what is your PFC power range ?
a. small power like ballaster 10w ~ 30w for Lamp
b. PC power supply 250w ~ 350w ?

2. what is yor method control PFC ?
pf = coseTheta
for get good power factor , you should detect zero_current
and switch power_mosfet On/Off then let "current" phase close Volt phase
many control topology can be use ..
