Hi, Merry Christmas!
"severe pathloss environments often are desirable in a multiuser wireless network, such as CDMA/WiMAX systems." Can any one tell me why?

I guess if the loss is more then the interference is less for other channels. So there will be more users due to less interference.

To kspalla: Thank you for your reply, but the loss may be identical to all the users, so the interference is still the same. On the other hand, the pathloss may bring more errors.
 

Let say 3 users (1,2,3) in a line for optimistic case.
then the interference cause by 1 to 3 is less as per assumption. In this case user 2 can communicate with full data rate with both 1 and 3.
But user 1 may not link to user 3 or with low data rate only due to severe loss.

I presume that for the link 1 to 2 or 3 to 2 is not containing severe errors as they are in tolerable zone.

Added after 2 minutes:

the loss will not be identical in the case given above.
Let say if they located in equi-distance and path loss for one side is 20dB then interfence by 1 to 3 will be 20 dB.
So interference will not be equal due to spacial placement.

Added after 3 minutes:

Sorry simple correction
If path loss to 1 to 2 is 20 dB.
then the inter fence from 1 to 3 will be 40 dB which is much less.

To kspalla: Thank you for your reply, it is proper in your case, but for a network, if most of the interfering transmitters are nearer than the desired transmitter. then the severe pathloss will affect the system terribly. On the other hand, if most of the interfering transmitters are farther away than the desired transmitter -- just as you assumption, the pathloss is preferable.
