6v which is direct contact with pin

first of all let me clarify your question,
how do you get a 6V at its i/o pin.(are you giving any supply to that particular bidirectional i/o?)
if not then you r just getting some floating voltage.
And BTW,are you not going to murder the chip by pulling it to 12V.I think its max i/p vg is 7V
