Measureing AC current

I am trying to measure the current use from a household outlet and and was looking at using either a hall effect sensor, or a toroid. I am however having difficulty understanding the datasheets. I cannot seem to find either formulae or any reference to expected output from either device. If anyone has expierence using such devices or an alternate means of measuring ac current (resistive methods aside) would be appreciated.
