DavidNelly,

If you really want to buy a good programmer, I suggested to you the Microchip ICD (In Circuit Debugger). This is a debugger, and a programmer too. It's a very good equipment. I have a PICSTART+ but a friend have ICD and it's a very powerfull tool.

If you decided to build your own, you culd start using Propic (www.propic2.com) with the ICProg software (www.ic-prog.com/index1.htm).

check olimex they offer a schematic that you can build your self or you may buy it from them

Try this

I've put here everything needed to build the programmer.

If you want to do an easy programmer, I recomend you the "PG2C" programmer, by Olimex. It's a very easy to do programmer. All that you need to know is the pic programmer pin (MCLR,VDD,PGD,PGC,PGM). It use the serial port.

I'm using the "propic2" programmer. It's a litle more complicated, but it have external power (i don't have the schematic, but if you need it, i search for it).

To use the propic2 with WinPic800 software, you must to do some configurations, i show you in the second image.

I have an usb programmer, it's a litle complicated to do and i don't prove it. If you want it, i'll upload it.

Ho-Lo Systems is the best choice which support most of MCUs.
