I have used the Siteplayer and it is fairly functional. I also have a Lantronix dev kit, but haven't had much time to play with it.

Your choice of hardware will depend on what functionality you need.

You don't say which micro you prefer, but I have used this board which is inexpensive, and comes configured, programmed, and ready to use. It works very well:https://microcontrollershop.com/product_info.php?cPath=112_160_206&products_id=893

They also have AVR boards, but they cost more. This site also sells the OLIMEX ARM boards, which are also offered on SparkFun:https://www.sparkfun.com/commerce/product_info.php?products_id=273
