Modem isolator transformer

hi,

could anyone explain to me y we need a audio isolating transformer in modems.

Isolation transformers protect modem itself as well as the attached DTE (data terminal equipment: computers, printers, terminals .. ) from line hazards such as AC or DC overvoltage, and eliminates possible problems with ground loops ..
