gps and power ?

hi

for who has excperience with interfacing with gps,i have the etrex garmin unit

do i need to supply external voltage to the gps unit ,knowing that it already have batteries ,to be able to use the rs232 (do the rs232 needs external power supply than the batteries of the gps)

thanks for help

Re: gps and power ?

If you want to use the GPS for short period of time, the batteries will be sufficient enough, but if you want to run it for long time, then better option is to use external power.
As far as the "RS-232" interface is concerned, be aware that most of GPS devices (including Garmin) operate only 0-5V what in fact has nothing to do with "true" RS-232 levels. But because for domestic applictions this level 0-5V, that is, was easier to generate, most of contemporary PC, laptops, etc. will read these devices..

And for that reason (no proper RS-232 driver) you don't need external power..

Re: gps and power ?

hi

thanks too much IanP u are a real support hear

i bought the cable which connect the gps to pc ...when i measure the output from the transmitting signal to pc i found it range between -4.5 and 1.5 voltage ...the negative is ok ...but the positive range is small as what i think is that normal ,

also i need to know why there is as power pin from the gps to the cable ...is it input or output

thanks too much for help

Re: gps and power ?

Most of GPS receivers have input for external power. Before connecting anything there check with user manual for max acceptable voltage for your device.
Incase you have a Garmin brand, you may find this ink very useful:
