Please help!
A new and expensive HDD (SSD) in my Compaq nc6220 is blocked :-(. It can be used for data storage as external USB HDD. But laptop doesn’t work when it’s internal. Every time at POST step (in different nc6220 and even with bootable DVD as first) I’m receiving 1782—Disk Controller Failure and a blue key symbol. I didn’t set DriveLock password and it’s inaccessible (grey) in BIOS. How to unlock my SSD? Cloning or formating are possible but doesn't help

Thanks in advance.

Is it possible the SSD (solid state drive?) responds too quickly for the laptop to interpret it properly? Therefore it generates a disk controller failure?

What disk does your laptop start up from? What OS? Can you be sure the OS is able to recognize SSD?

Can you change the BIOS setting which tells what sequence to check disks for presence of an OS?

'Blue key symbol'. I suppose this is indicates the laptop thinks it's locked by a password? Perhaps the OS expects for every SSD to be locked by a password? Therefore it generates an error if no password is previously hidden inside the SSD? Can you change the BIOS setting in this regard?

What if you were to try creating a password for the SSD? This is risky. To do it I guess you need to put it in an external enclosure.

I suppose this is indicates the laptop thinks it's locked by a password? Exactly!
This HP laptop issue is known - check the Internet with "DriveLock password, 1782 Disk Controller Failure"

How many physical drives on the laptop? I had the same problem when adding a new SSD to my TP.

By happenstance my old laptop has developed this same problem with a conventional hdd (purchased 2007). Win XP. It worked fine for years, then conked out after an operation involving a lot of disk writing. It clicked loudly, then the computer paused, then a blue screen.

Now at startup it asks for a Drivelock password, or else displays 'disk controller failure'.The hd gets hot. I never set a Drivelock password on it.

I transferred the hd to an external enclosure. It clicks once, then I see the same message. I tried cooling it in the refrigerator, but that didn't help. Discussions on message boards give no hope for a cure.

The laptop works fine when I start it from a different hd.
