The defintion of folded cascode.

From the picture seems like the definition of cascode is

1) folded.jpeg

1)The input tansistor turns from nmos to pmos. or if differential, turns both nmos to pmos.
2)insert a current source between the input transistor and the upper load transistor.

The objective is improve the output swing and input swing.

Is that good enough observation for folded cascode?
but turning the input transistor from nmos to pmos, that would make circuit slower? No?

Re: The defintion of folded cascode.

It doesn't matter if the input transistor is NMOS or PMOS. What folded cascode is is a circuit in which the cascoding transistor is of the complementary type of the input transistor. This allows you to extend the input range beyond rails because there is no Vdssat+Vth anymore, it's just Vdssat of the current mirror load of the input transistors. You can even use two different input stages to extend your voltage range from rail to rail.
