I am very familiar with OrCAD Layout 15.7. Unfortunately OrCAD PCB Editor 16.6 is nothing remotely similar.
I added several lines of text on the silkscreen layer (board name/number/etc.) as a "User Part Number". However I now want to add more text and every time I go to add a text string it is forcing me to choose an element to attach the text to. I have no idea what might have changed in the editor between then and now but I just want to add some free silkscreen text not tied to any specific component.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I'm guessing this has to do with the class or subclass you have selected once you try to add text. Could you have it set to "Ref Des" or something similar rather than something like Board Geometry/SilkScreen Top?

Changing to Board Geometry/SilkScreen Top did work! I had it set to User Part Number/Silkscreen top because one of the text strings I was adding was in fact a part number but apparently that's bad? Is that just to add internal part numbers to components?
Either way that worked and thank you! It's really frustrating when I'm sitting there thinking "I could do this in two clicks with 15.7..."
