USB differential mode adavantage for FPGAs

Hello, i am implementing a project with USB1T11A and Cyclone IV FPGA. The tranceiver got two operating modes. Differential and single ended. Someone can point me out the advantage of each mode? With the singled ended i would have one less line in the schematic, but whats the tradeoff?

You are likely refering to single ended mode as PHY-less USB between two chips on the same PCB. (PHY is physical interface, the low voltage differential pair interface transceiver for USB)

Normal USB between two separate devices is always differential.

There are normal USB control modes of pulling the diff pair both high or low that must be translated for a direct single ended connection. This usually is done with separate single ended control lines.
