help required regarding the difference between AM modulator and mixer

hi,
i will be very grateful if some one can help me out in resolving the querry that can i replace a mixer with AM modulator.....my incoming signal is already modulated in digital domain (FSK) and is being converted to analog one at about 20 KHz centre frequency.....i need to up-convert that signal to 200 MHz....it can be done with the help of mixers and filters.....but i am in search of any alternative of low frequency mixer as they are not available within the country....can an AM modualtor serve the purpose....if so, what will be the difference between an upconversion by a mixer and modulation by AM modulator?.....kindly guide me.....
 

A mixer is in principle a multiplier; it multiplies for instance the local-oscillator signal with an IF input signal. Then pairs of multiples are generated in frequency spectrum. We typically choose one of them, name it RF and use filters to suppress all others. Such action is named "upconversion" and can be used to modulate a low-frequency (audio, video) on a radio-frequency LO signal to get RF output. Or you can take an already modulated RF signal say at 1...10 MHz, and upconvert it to >100 MHz by the same process.

In receivers, the process is reversed, a RF signal is multiplied by LO signal, and low-frequency beat is generated as desired.
