i got a EVAL232R FTDI board for free, and i would like to use it to program a PIC18F4520 that currently has no bootloader. can the CBUS pins on the FTDI as a ICSP?

I think i can, but im not sure how to program the FTDI to use CBUS in the first place. If i change it(FTDI) to use CBUS, will the regular TTL DB9 port on the board still work?

thanks

Hi,

If you had a bootloader on the 4520 then you could easliy serially download the program code via the FTDI with a suitable program.

If you could configure the FTDI CBUS capable of connecting in ICSP mode what PC software is there to drive it ?

The Pickit2 / 3 seems the easy option.

the ftdi website has virtual COM drivers(Virtual COM Port Drivers) and D2XX drivers(D2XX Direct Drivers)

im pretty sure it has ICSP support with the CBUS pins, but im not sure how to set them up. why buy a pickit when i have this?

hmmm .. head-aches perhaps

Doubt its something few folk will have tried as unlike your freebie, the cost of that module is almost the same as a Pickt2.

good luck !
