atmega8535 and serial communication and bits architecture

hello everyone
i am using atmega8535 controller, iuse this in serial communication with gsm modem and working fine.
but do not know in tx mode how many bits modem send and our controllers how many bits can receive maximum in single time .a
and also about gsm modem and its rx bits ,how many bits it send in a time.
i suppose our controller is 8 bit controller ,but as i know there are msb and lsb then it makes 16 bits ,, so getting confused ,so i must be confirm for future....
so please give me solution.
