Newbie trying to control a motor..? From a ps3 with arduino

My ps3 broke and while trying to fix it I basically ended up breaking it more.. so I gave up and decided to fool around with some of the parts instead.

The picture below is from the optical disk drive. For some reason I want to be able to control the motor at the top of the pic that moves the slide assembly.. but don't know how to do so. I'd guess that its a stepper motor.

As far as I can tell there are four wires going to the motor and I have tried imputing random volategs into them inorder to get some response (to try to figure out what the leads do).. I have used both a power supply and outputs from my arduino(not sure if I did this right), but got nothing.

I noticed only two of the leads created a circuit when connected together (from multimeter) I figured maybe those are power and ground?

What would you guys do?
