Why there is active byte lane in AHB protocol?

In AHB protocol, I found:
"For transfers that are narrower than the width of the bus, for example a 16-bit transfer
on a 32-bit bus, then the bus master only has to drive the appropriate byte lanes."

Why data in different beat should placed on different byte lane?
What's the advantage of that ? Or any other concern?
