how to plot antenna radiation pattern and calculate power what exactly is this radiation pattern is can anyone explain practical example of it.

radiation pattern are just like the eyes of antenna in which the antenna is able to transmit or receive the signals. consider the monopole antenna, it radiation pattern is omni directional which means it can send and receive signal in all direction whereas dipole antenna is bi directional so it will send and receive the signal only in left and right direction. radiation pattern also gave us information like gain of antenna, side lobes and what will be its orientation (vertical, horizontal etc polarization). few matlab codes are available at net which could gave us general idea of radiation pattern of different types of antenna.

Hi
radiation pattern give you an idea about the coverage of an antenna gain and maximum detection area (3dB point ) the easiest way to draw the radiation pattern is to draw it manually by direction and magnitude you take the antenna and feed it by power and use an isotropic detector (omnidirectional ) to receive the signal and calculate the power with angle and plot it as polar diagram (magnitude and direction ) until you get a clear figure of your pattern , the mathematical ways to obtain the pattern is quite difficult , and some antennas have no mathematical calculations but it's rarely used these days .
