In our new future design there will be a 5 to 7" display (not desided completely yet) with a touch interface. To get to the point quickly we look for a windows manager that is small enough and usefull for small embedded devices to become the platform for our graphical interface. Code based on C is preferred.
As we could not agree upon whether to just create our own simple manager or to use commercial variants I decided to go looking on the web for alternatives. I found one that looked promising named C/PEG from Swell Software: Graphics Software for Embedded Systems. But only one alternatives gives little choice hence my request herein.
The information to be shown is not much but its based on an home screen with simple system information as clock and uptime etc. and with click-able icons to enter different functionalities. These functionalities could be configuration of the product including writing text labels (i.e. either have support for on screen touch keyboard or we will design in external mechanical keyboard with ps/2) or to show statistics like curves and process data or it could be to monitor core function and apply to alarms etc.
There will be a simple RTOS, probably eCos or similar, but nothing such fancy as Linux or CE.
As you see, we are pretty early in the design process so by having as many alternatives as possible in an early stage makes things simpler later on. Open source (not necessary free) is preferable.
NOTE: I also looked into matchbox as is the same as used in Maemo as found in Nokia 770 and 800, I am not familiar with it yet though so I don't exactly know if it is an over kill or not yet. Experiences is welcome!
EDIT: There is also wxWidgets, It seems okay, but first impression was a bit 3.11
