Problem when programming Max7000S with JTAG

unrecognized device or socket is empty

I want to program my MAX EPM7128SLC84-15 through its JTAG port
I have purchased ByteBlasterMW from Altera and using MAXPlus II 10.23
But SW gives me a message ( Unrecognized device or socket is empty )
I don't know why ?
The connections with TMS,TCK,TDI and TDO are directly from the JTAG to the chip but I didn't put pull up resistors ...
My question is :
1- Did any body face this problem before ?
2- Should I put pull up resistors to the JTAG pins ?

The ByteBlasterMV datasheet shows an example JTAG connection and how to use pull-up/pull-down resistors...please do so accordingly and try again...

max ii jtag pullup pulldown resistors

the ByteBlaster datasheet in this site

don't contain any information about the pullup/down resisors that should be connected with the JTAG , the only schematic shown in page 4 is the schematic of the Blaster itself !
If you have a link for such info plz help

wrong device or empty socket altera byteblaster

Okay..not in the byteblaster datasheet but in the application note mentioned within (Application note 95 clickable link within).

Seems you're also one of those electronic developers who doesn't care about datasheets/application notes (o;

how to read max7000

A great chance is your CPLD's JTAG function is disabled. I got a chip with the same problem and the only solution I know is erase the whole chip with parallel programmer. Please inform me if anybody know some way to earse this chip without using commercial programmer.

take care to add also the 100nF capacitor. It's urgently needed. We made very bad experiences with not having this part leading to a wrong programming

Thankx Epegic , but the problem is that I want to read the chip not to write on it so , I can't erase it first !
I have connected the pull up / pull down resistors as mentioned in the AN95 but still I have message ( Unrecognized device or socket is empty )
????
Any body can give a hand !

maxplus下载出现unrecognized device

Vonn,

The problem is JTAG function was blocked so that you can't access the chip with these pins. The only way is use parallel programmer to read back if the chip is not protected. Chip vendor did not release the algorithm of parallel programming, so you have to use commercial programmer.

have u installed the driver?
if u use WIN2k or WINXP,u must install the driver .

i use EPM7128SLC84-15,too.

you are completely right ; the only way is to use a commercial programmer for parallel programming / reading the chip..
Now after reading the file I tried to reload the pof file to the M@X Plus to use the JTAG port to program the new one ; the problem is that it can't recognize the file format ; although it's a pof file , but it seems that the programmer adds some headers to the file or some thing like this ..
Does any body tried to remove these headers done by Commercial programmers ..
I use Hi-L0 systems programmer !

pof jtag

The format of files generated by commercial programmer usually not avialible to public. I think you can

either erase the chip with parallel programmer and recomplie your design to download using JTAG - treat it as new design.

or raad from existing chip and write to chip again with parallel programmer - exactly duplicate the chip.

byteblaster mv pull up

I had the problem with BB and EPM7...
The problem was solved by setting the capacitor 100pF between TDI and GND.
Sorry, don't remember exactly - may be it was TDO.
