Hello all,

What is synchronous stepper motor , and how to drive it . for example i have motor from superior electric , slo-syn type ss252b.

Its steps are controllable or not.

Dani

Look sharp. The type plate doesn't say "synchronous stepper motor", it says "synchronous/stepping", indicating a dual use,
either as sine AC driven synchronous or square wave driven stepper. This is possible because a permanent magnet
sychronous motor can be used in both modes of operation. In both cases, the rotor position has a clear relation to the
driving voltage respectively current. In so far, it's position controlled. For optimal drive dynamic and torque, an electronical
controlled synchronous motor can be operated with a rotor position feedback, e.g. a resolver or encoder.

FvM,

Thanks for correcting me. Would u please share idea that how to interface it with micro-controller like PIC. It has three wires.

Dani

As a first point, you may want to check, if the motor can be driven by low voltage at all. The three terminal coil configuration
is mainly intended for single phase AC supply with phase shift capacitor. You can check if datssheets for your motor are available.
The SlowSyn family has been aquired by Danaher Motion/Kollmorgen

To operate the motor as a stepper, you should imagine the coil configuration as a bipolar stepper motor with both coils shorted together
at one side. It can be supplied either by three half bridges (if only one coil is energized at a time) or two half bridges and a
enter tapped bus voltage.
