Hi,
I need to find a way to provide a backup power supply for some equipment installed in a car.

It is usually drawing around 2-3Amps from the car's 12V supply, but I need to have some sort of temporary backup if the car's supply is interrupted momentarily.

I can think of two possible solutions:

1. Supercapacitors which will provide a few seconds of backup.
2. A small battery kept charged by the 12v supply which will cut in when the 12V supply is lost.

One stipulation is that I need to keep this '12V UPS' as small and light as possible. Hence, I don't want to use lead-acid battery and trickle charger, but a Lithium battery would be suitable.

The second approach would probably be better because I could easily use a large battery if I needed several minutes of backup, but with the recent developments in supercaps I'm wondering if that's viable.

Does anyone have any suggestions/recommendations or know of any 'off the shelf' solutions like this?

most supercaps are just 3.3v or something.

i'd go for yor lithium idea..

eg ti.com do loads of battery charger chips
