channel BW and Data Rate

Is there any correlation between the BW and data rate? I here alot of people use the terms as if they are synonomous.

For instance if I am generating data at a rate of 2mb/s and I wish to modulate this data onto an RF carrier how do I determine how much channel BW I require?
 

Depending on modulation which you will use...

Some complex modulation schemes are trading BW against dynamic range, e. g. the multi-bit symbol methods used in digital broadcast and telephony. But they generally require a higher effort than simple AM and FM modulation.

B.T.W. I don't think that modulation and channel capacity considerations can be found in usual DSP text books, it's rather a information theory and telecommunications topic.
 

A lot of DSP engineers (or DSP books) called bandwidth simply as “data transfer rate”.
For a particular digital modulation have to check this area for the exact correlation.
 

BW is depend on the chip/ symbol rate and the RRC filter used in modulator.
for example, the WCDMA's chip rate is 3.84MHz,the RRC filter's alpha is 0.22, so the Occupied BW is about [3.83*(1+0.22)]MHz.

you can refer the book 'RF SYSTEM DESIGN OF TRANSCEIVERS FOR WIRELESS COMMUNICATIONS'.
 

suppose you are using FSK.
Then select which frequency band you want to operate.
say its 315 MHz or 900MHz. I am considering ISM bands.
Then you need to select the specific receiver for demodulation.
Now here your have to decide your bandwidth.
since it will decide your sensitivity(noise performance) also operating range.
& correspondingly your data rate.
Please refer datasheets & their application notes.
