Hi, sorry if I repeat any of some previous topics, couldn't find anything by search.

Anyway, I can't find my way around speeding up the display on my digital speedo that I've recently put together.
The driver is a 4553 and 14513 combo (multiplex) and the update rate is currently about 1 sec. As it was meant to measure speed I would like to have a little quicker response to changes.
So, if anybody would be so kind to explain is it possible to change (speed up) the display update rate to some 5-10/sec and if so, how?

Thanx

Re: 7-seg update rate

Hi,
If you can increase the pulse output from the encoder, you can correspndingly reduce the period of accumulation of pulses and thus increase the speed update rate without affecting the accuracy. Otherwise if you can sacrifice accuracy, for a given encoder you can speed up the update rate marginally. But these methods are limited in scope in that you can not increase the update rate considerably.
Alternatively, you can speed up the update by measuring the period of the encoder pulses and calculating the speed from there using the micro controller.
