does anyone have recomendations for papers or have papers concerning:

broadbanded patch/microstrip dipole - bw is 20%
slot coupled microstrip patch - maybe my best chance at achieving said bw?

application will require dual polarization, so some applications may not be applicable, such as slot loading the radiating element from Kin-Lu Wong for instance.

Your 20% bandwidth requirenent is not too stringent for what is considered wideband. Search the IEEE transactions on Antennas and Propagation as well as the Microwave (MTT) section and you will find numerous possibilities.

Coupled feeds are one possibility but you may be able to get by with just a thick substrate. Lots of air under the patch is good for increasing bandwidth.

Your need for dual linear polarization makes things a little more difficult. Could you use circular instead? That may not be any easier but then it might be a helpful alternative.

The choices start to thin out around 35% bandwidth and above that it gets really difficult.

azulykit - thanks for the input. from what i've seen so far, the broadbanded type mpa's appear to be more realizable for

a. single polarization
b. single elements or small arrays

i say single polarization because the bandwidth of the element is related to slots or assymetric patterns in the radiating element.

the requirement is dual linear, and not cp.

i'll look into the thick air gap approach, you have seen bandwidths of 20% and good broadside radiation patterns achievable?

also maybe you have read this paper:
'wideband apeture coupled stacked patch antenna using thick substrates' written by Taragonsi and Pozar.

are you familiar with this paper i could ask a question?

I am don't recall that particular paper but I have seen that technique get to around 50 % bandwidth (I did it myself).

I would expect that you could find something useful for your dual linear application without using all the tricks. As always, as one adds requirements the design gets harder.
