use RTS and DTR pin to control RS485 strobe controls and RX-TX for data transmission
 

Rs232 to 485

for 2-wire 485 network, there are non-echo designs and echo designs.

The echo can be used to verify if the signal send out correctly. If not required, just ignore the data received when transmitting. Some network design require an echo for bus arbitration, some network don't require this feature.

We got one design (with echo) on production: RS485/SAE J1708 to RS232 converter.
