forward smps

Is anybody knows about how to design the forward converter transformer using used smps transformer without knowing transformer data?. I have used 350 Watts ATX power supply, I need to redesign the transformer to output DC 5V 50A. Is it possible without knowing the transformer data?. Could we estimate the data from the exising design, so we can redesign the transformer?.
Thank you.

You should find out the primary inductance of the transformer. The formula relating inductance and power applies.

P = 0.5 * L * I^2 * f

P = power
L = inductance
I = current
f = switching frequency

If you want to redesign a data for pc ATX psu, Please re-check the circuit configuration, as most of the PC -ATX power supply use Half Bridge circuitary & the transformer design will be different from forward type design.
If you are shure it is a forward type design then you can refer to SMPS design books on this forum such as book by Abraham pressman. or by keith billings

In forward converter power is transfered to secondary in power cycle & duty cycle is generally limited to 50%

Thank you for your replay. The problem is how to calculate the inductance without knowing transformer core data. Most any books about smps design need to know the transformer core data to calculate the transformer inductance. Is it possible to find out the transformer core data by experimenting?. If yes, please tell me how to do it. What about the existing transformer core gap?, can I ignore it?

I look forward to hearing from you.

Do you have atleast a core in front of you if so measure a Cross sectional area of central limb which is your Ae rewquired in most of the calculations & measure a bobbin cross section (in one segment of E) which is your winding cross sectional area & now you can refer any of the book for other detailed calculations.

But if you dont have any core / bobbin it is not possible to go ahed

The core dimension I have, when I measure is (in mm):
A=40mm, B=16mm, C=12mm, D=12mm

Thank you
