[SOLVED] question about LM317 circuit.

What happens if you short the output pin to the input pin on an LM317 circuit, with the ground leg still connected? Would it blow the LM317?
 

LM317 output is short-circuit protected so it will most definitely not blow.

However, when you short output and input pins you might damage the input source which is supplying power to LM317.

That wasn't the question, short circuit protection is from the output to ground or reference pin not across the device.
The data sheet recommends a protection diode across the input and output pins to limit the reverse voltage so the answer is almost certainly no, it wouldn't be damaged if Vi and Vo were shorted but if Vo went to a higher voltage than Vi if probably would be.
