Im stating a new job as a high performance analog layout engineer, and I want to improve my knowledge of the area. Im a beginner at the subject, and would be forever gratefull if you could recomend a book or two relating to high performance analog ciruit layout. I have a good background on electronics, I just dont know a lot about layout technics.

Thanks a lot.

high performance analog layout?

《the art of analog layout design》& 《ic mask design》are not enough.
practice is very important!

Book recomanedations for beginning Layout engineer

Hi, as mentioned in the previous mail, in analog layout, practice is more important. You can refer "art of analog layout" by Alan Hastings, chapters on resistor and capacitor matching, topics on electron migration, ir drop etc. don’t try to read the whole book right in the beginning. There also two good books from Judy Saint on layout and mask design. They are really good books to begin with.
Search web for topics like resistor, capacitor or transistor matching. There should be a good amount of pdf docs available.
Try to understand your process, at least in high level.
Regards,

Thanks for the excelent recomendations.

I could not find the book you sugest(the art of analog layout design), but found a very similar one. The Art of Analog Layout by Alan Hastings. Do you mean that book?

Thanks a lot. You are right... practice is very important, and its one of the thigs I need more. Could you point me to some excersises and stuff that has examples and such. I have some knowledge of comon centroids, guard rings, shielding, noise reduction conciderations, capacitor and resistor matching, epitaxial process and such, but only the theroy, desperedly need some practice.

If you have any more books to recomend, I would be very grateful.

Go to Franco Maloberti homepage or try to get his paper, he writes a bit on mixed signal layout

Hi NightHawk_099,
You can find the book here:

You can try Judy Saints’ books for more practical tips. I assume that you are working in cadence environment. You can then register in sourcelink.cadence.com. It provides tool related support. You can download all the user guides and all from this site.

In Layout job, it is equally important to have good knowledge of your EDA environment and tools. Try to build expertise in your tools at the earliest. Previously Cadence used to provide a lot of learning materials in a support site CRETE.

For layout practice, I’ll recommend you to go through the layout, DRC, LVS, RCX of an inverter first. Then do the same for simple gates. Then try an op-amp. As you increase the size of your block, you should focus more in floor planning. There should be some database available in your team DB itself. Try to understand the layout and recognize various transistors by comparing it with schematic. This will be a good exercise for you in the beginning.
