Gerber Format:
"RS-274-D is the technical name for Gerber Format, which is the industry standard photo plotting language. The designation RS-274-X is sometimes [incorrectly] used to refer to this language format.
The format was first introduced in 1980, and has been upgraded several times since then. The most significant enhancement was the addition of embedded aperture codes in early 1991. This feature allows each file to be completely self defining, needing no other accompanying documents for processing. CIRCAD utilizes embedded aperture codes in all its Gerber output files"

You need PCB design software such as for example EAGLE (demo version with limintations can be downloaded for free: http://cadsoft.de/download.htm ).
There you will find an option to output your design in GERBER format.
Here you have more info:

Re: gerber files

use RS274X
number of digits- 4 leading and 4 trailing.
Coodinates - absolute

Zero suppress - leading.

is a good format

Re: gerber files

thanx for your replies,i am using power pcb software and it is an excellent tool, but when i want to generate cam files,it allow me to generate any gerber files i want so, i want definitly what to generate( component side routing, inner planes routing, drilling.. etc).
you know! it is such a lot of informaton.. so what does the manufacturer needs, so i know what to generate...!

Re: gerber files

For two side PDB :

- bottom layer
- top layer
- mask for bottom
-mask for top layer
-drill file

This is minimum ( you also can do it wihout mask) for 2 side PCB

Re: gerber files

to generate gerber file u just go through the file->cam in pcb software. then

1. create a cam directory.
2. add document:-set information for document name, document type, output file and fabrication layer
3. in gb_dd or drill drawing generate the drill sysmbol from option.
4. again in gb_dd generate d-code from device setup.
5. select all document name
6. run (generate gerber output file .pho)
7. then save listing and aperture report
8. also export .cam file
9. goto directory and rearrange accordingly as per manufacturer.
10. send the .pho, .rep, .lst, .drl, and .cam files to the manufacturer.

Re: gerber files

Gerber files are manufacturing output files .Design can be done in any platform but all design files are given as gerber format for manufacturing. It includes top, bottom layer,Signal layers ,plane layers and non eletrical layers -top silk, bottom silk etc.It also includes the drill drawing and assemply layers for drilling details and assembly of components

Re: gerber files

tank you all, you really helped me.
i'll try what you told me.
