Simple Transistor, why is it working?

Hi,

Any ideas why this isn't working?
I am new to electronics, but Ive done a lot of reading up and I think this should work:

1-You should use LED D5 by a resistor
2- You should use NPN transistor for switch.
Regard.
 
You need series resistors for the LED's to control the current!
D5 will short the output from the micro
 
Excellent, thanks guys, My real problem was that the wire going to D1 also went to ground (off the initial image) which caused a short.
