    The HC125 chip is for toggling the run and program mode, you can eliminate it by just grounding/connecting to Vcc the needed pins.

    It depends on your usb to serial converter, if what you have is a TTL one, then you do not have to use the DS232 or other RS232 converter.

    The problem with kbhit() is that the microcontroller must be in the kbhit(), for it to process the next line, better use an interrupt.

    In open drain systems, you will need a pull up resistor to make use of the output or use the open drain where you will connect the load and the supply line. This will sink more current.
