The fundamental difference between DSPs and microcontrollers can be derived from the names: DSPs are more efficient when used for signal processing while microcontrollers are better at controlling and timing.
DSPs are preferred for tasks like signal filtering, modulation and so on...
Re: Serial communication
A software USART can be implimented, but will take a heavy toll on your processing capabilities. I've recently used a MAX3100 spi USART in a project with great success.
All the nitty-gritty timing and formatting is done by the MAX3100 and the microcontroller uses...
bootloader hi tech
I've used the bootloader from http://microchipc.com with great success.
Try the hitech forum, take link from www.hitech.com.au and search for their bootloader, works fine as well.
I also started with the pic16f84 and progressed to other devices.
The net is flooded with examples and programmers.
And then the free samples do come in handy...
