I'm working with it under MPLAB 8.10. It must work with all MPLAB versions, because it uses the same firmware as official ICD2.
There is a great chance that you have a short circuit or break on the wires between 16F877 and 18F4550.

You don't need base resistors, if you use transistors as emitter-follower, like here: **broken link removed**
For common cathode dislays use pnp transistors, and connect it's collectors to gnd.
18F serie has 75 instructions.
PIC can run at higher speed.
C18 compiler is free from Microchip, and the 18F serie is optimized to program with C.
Programming of the PIC is more elegant, there is no need for working oscillator or external clock for serial programming.
