I have been in the electronics industry for over 40 years. I have *yet* to see major inprovements in quality control or...
You probably can repair it yourself. The transformer inside is the heaviest component and so I guess a bit resoldering here and there will put it back into service.

There are too many formulas to draw them all up.
I suggest to get the "Handbook of Electronic Tables and Formulas" by SAMS (22469), ISBN:0-672-22469-0. The ISBN number is for the sixth edition, so check for the latest...
like i said many times, a lot of manuals are not free.
