recommendation for low range RF rx and tx modules?

If you can use chips instead of modules (cheaper) I would strongly recomend nRF905 from Nordic VLSI (http://www.nvlsi.com/) It is easy to use and relativly cheap, about 4USD in small qty(1-10). /Froggy

    calibrating a temperature sensor

If you need that precis calibration, why not just rent a calibrated meter and use that as a reference? and btw at least the melting ice can be very exact at sea level if you keep the mixture of water and ice in a insulated bottle, and wait 30-60 minutes to stabilize after you insert the probe...

    calibrating a temperature sensor

The easy way to do it quite accurate is to use a bath of melting ice for 0 deg. and boiling water for 100 deg. This is of course asuming that you are at sea level. /Froggy

    DS1307 backup battery lifetime?

Why not just consulting the datasheets: The battery you using has typ. 80mAh capacity. DS1307 is using 500nA in battery mode (or 800nA if you are using the square wave output) This gives you: for 500nA 160000h or 18.2 year for 800nA 100000h or 11.4 year the storage time for a lithium battery...
