Step time for oscillator

Does anybody know why it is important for step time to be small when simulating oscillators. I was simulatiing 19.4 Mhz crystal oscillator. When my step size is 100p it does not oscillate, when it is 1ps it oscillates.

Generally I connect the source drain and body to ground. I then give a ramp voltage say 0 to 1.2V in 1.2ps using pwl. now observe the current. I generally remains constant. C= I/(dV/dT) i.e I/(10^11). note the cap befor threshold is differernt from cap after thereshold.
