throughput data rate
lets try a different way:
Throughput is a measure of the delivered payload, stripping away framing and management "packets".
Data rate is the bit rate - example:what you might set your "UART" to.
Re: traffic microcontroller
how complex is your model?
is not your east and west direction signal lamps both the same?
is not your north and south direction signal lamps both the same?
hint..
Basically a terminal emulator - lots of those projects on the web for
basic ascii serial.
If you want enhanced features stick to a "standard" serial protocols,
either crystalfontz (as mentioned )or matrixorbital or seetron.
added advantage-then you can test with a pc program lcdsmartie etc

pic controller for cdrom
Folks I am confused. The picture in the first post is the wilson mucop 16f877 asm.
what has been uploaded is an atmel based project in C.
looks more like onhold ver2?
pic audio control
Indeed, it would be nice if someone who has debugged the opensource mucop
would share the corrected source.
I do know the elector project (2004) does work but plays single tracks as is.

Re: Darlingtons or fets
noticed you didn't say the voltage requirements?
agree a power type fet is best , probably a logic type power fet
which requires less current thru the gate to achieve full rds on.
sometimes it matters more what is at hand when you are prototyping
