I wonder Sinatra's approach is valid for ALL cases.
Could Sinatra tell us what is the multiplication factor in your design, and what professional generators do you use to make the comparsion?
Bode diagrams ?
The bode plot of the open loop system provides you the gain, gain margin and phase margin. Based on this info, you can design the feedback network in order to meet the system requirement (gain, stability, ...).
directional coupler is a 4 ports network.
Power supplied from port 1 is transmitted to port 2 and a small amount of energy is coupled to port 3.

20mhz crystal size
This book "Design of Crystal and Other Harmonic Oscillators" by Benjamin Parzen (1983, ISBN 0-471-08819-6) introduces procedures to design a transistor based crystal oscillator.
I FEEL there are two problems:
1. 10uA
2. variations of crystal's parameters.
I FEEL (but not...
equivalent time sampling oscilloscopes
I don't think the sample rate is 80G samples / sec. The signal under test is a bandpass signal. If the sample rate is n*bandwidth, the bandpass signal will be downconverted to baseband. n = ?
overtone crystal
I think it is a special crystal that provides a relative high harmonic at the desired frequency. When I ordered crystals, I specified it was fundamental or 3rd tone.
Usually a 802.11a MAC are software base as the spec is being changed (eg. fixing new security holes). If it is hardware base, it is bit hard to upgarde.
What functions do you want to implement in tx/rx MAC?
7805 high current
You can add an external transistor to increae the output current. It is a very common circuit. I saw it from NS databook (> 10 years ago).
An ODM helps us to design a mini pci 802.11 card using atheros chip set. It takes 6 months (with > 1 engineers) to get the wifi approval but it is still full of bugs. Now a wlan card (11a/b/g) is cheap and widely available. I don't suggest you design your wlan card. Instead I suggest you...
